VINEYARDOur Durif is grown on the De Bortoli Shelley’s vineyards on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. The site has an interesting gravel, clay and alluvial soil mix with different aspects which helps generate different flavour profiles. SEASON2021 was a fantastic year to grow grapes in Rutherglen. After regular rainfall events and a mild summer the grapes have ripened to their ultimate potential. The whites in particular have outstanding flavour intensity. The reds had great colour, varietal flavours and structure which is enhanced to the natural acid retained due to the cooler season. APPEARANCEDeep dark brooding red with vibrant red hues. BOUQUETInviting aromas of blue and black berries, liquorice and spice, with chocolate and mocha to finish. PALATEThe Estate Durif has concentrated dark berry flavours, with chocolate, liquorice and well integrated oak. It has classic grainy Durif tannins that support the fruit and are integrated into the soul of the wine. WINEMAKINGSelected from our best Durif blocks, the 2021 Durif is partially crushed into red fermenters. The colour and tannin were extracted early in the fermentation when longer pump overs were used to ensure a softer extraction. The fruit is picked when the tannins are ripe and the grapes are still plump and fresh. The wine is fermented on skins for 10 to 14 days to keep a bright and vibrant fruit profile. The wine is aged in 60% American oak, with the balance French oak, with around 15% new. This combination gives tightness and roundness on the palate whilst helping to soften the tannins, finishing with an expressive approachable Rutherglen Durif. WINE ANALYSISAlc/Vol: 14.9 %, pH: 3.58, TA: 6.3 g/L CELLARINGOur Durif is made to cellar. It expresses its drinkability now but will continue to soften over the next 5 to 10 years. This particular wine will cellar nicely for up to 20 years. ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONVegan, Vegetarian |
